Long story short: Bathroom above ceiling, two kids try to bail out the tub, one run of joint tape now visible, wrinkly, and kinda yellow in places.
Can I just skim coat some compound over it and paint? How long would such a repair last?
And oh yeah, how can I prevent this? Water found its way down around the heat vent (rest of bathroom floor and walls are tile).
Gotta watch those kids like a hawk.

Roger,
It's a common problem. Only sure way to prevent it is to keep the water in the tub, though you have the unusual advantage of continuous tile. If you want to go to the trouble, you could seal off the heat register to a certain degree, maybe enough to contain a small pool before finding it next time. Usually this happens when toilets overflow.
As for the drywall, if all it did was run a small amount of water onto the ceiling and came out the seam, let it dry out real well, scrape some old mud off, pull the tape and if everything seems fairly solid you can probably just remud and tape.
But if a lot of water sat there a while, the drywall is probably soaked through and basically ruined. You'll have to remove all of the soaked dw and replace.
I've seen some jobs where some kilz sprayed on took care of this, some where the whole ceiling was a big sponge. Guess you're in between.
*If the tape shows crackling at edge when druying you'll have to ;peek it back and refinish. Insurance might cover it.prevention of future occurances involves beating the perpetrators within an inch of their lives, being sure that they under stand why.Now that I've hit all the high spots, this should be quite a long thread!
*If all it did was yellow the ceiling you can paint it with enamel undercoat. You will be done then because it is flat. Kilz would need to be top coated because it has a varying finish. If the tape has turned loose ;cut the loose part out with a knife ,bed and tape ., then paint as above. You never mentioned a texture.
*No texture. Tape is definately turned loose. I just got finished setting that tape 3 months ago. I wonder if it is possible to get a retroactive vasectomy.Well, they say practice is the key to drywall, so the kids are just doing their part to get me some more experience.cheers,Roger
