This is a flared maple stairway that I am working on in my shop. It has three sections to it. The back section is on my workbench as I build most of my straight stairs on their side. The third section tees into these two..and it is not built yet.

Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.

This is the rail being glued up for the flared section.
You've probably answered this before, and quite possibly to me :)
do you finish your own stairs or is that the responsibility of the builder/owner who buys them?
Cag: I just build them and have them sanded ...ready for finish. I could finish them...but usually the contractors or homeowner have their own finishers that do them.
As usual, great looking work! I think this is as close to a straight stair I have seen yet....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
Very nice Stan, you really have a flare for fine work.
Seldom reply to your pix post ( like 300 others on this board??<G>, 'cause I'm (we are) so jealous of your talent I (we) could just spit! )
Anyway, keep up the excellent work, and God Bless.
Keep posting!!! , those 'uv us less talented like to learn by example, no matter how old or of need to learn or embarrassed to compliment.
I'd love to see some young guys with responses in the future about a job they have done that have gotten inspiration from Stan's posts.
Junkhound: Thanks....I also wish more would post. I like to look at others work.
Stan's stuff is always so exciting.
But his workshop. Man, just look at that workshop!
I mean just look at that.
Halfway to cryin' with envy. :o)
Hi Stan,
Like the others said...beautiful as always! I think I've been saying that for the 3+ years I've been hanging out here?
Question if you don't mind...
Do you get a set of plans by the architect or engineer for your stairs or do you do the design and dimensioning?
Thanks, Stan

Mike: Usually the contractor or owner has me meet with them and design a stairway that fits their needs. Occasionally I get involved with an architect and to be honest...it usually never works as well.
Stan, Thanks. I was just curious as to if someone that didn't actually build the staircase (architectdesigner) was able to build it on paper and you've confirmed what I thought that you are involved from the inception.
