There was some discussion a while back about not being able to do flares with hardi-shingles. I agree that you should not flex them at all but we just did 3 flares with them that came out pretty good. The projection is 8 inches and the rise is 24 and we were careful to frame the flare as gradual as possible. We have a 6″ exposure so we cut the shingles from 18″ to 14″ so we still had a 2″ overlap as recommended by Hardi.

Nice! How about a lot more pics, showing things in nice bright light.
Show us the whole thing. The window trim for the round windows looks fabulous!
Materials used for trim?
Thank you. Unfortunately, my camera isn't very good so the pics are a little dark. Once we're done I'm planning on borrowing a better digital camera and taking clean shots from all the angles.
I'm attaching the drawing of what it should look like when we're done as well as a few other shots of the front. Most of the trim is Azek but we did use 3/4 birch plywood for the round windows. It will be an experiment to see how it wears against the Azek. :) I used a simple geometry for the shape (matching outside radius for the wings and such).
One thing I should note is that on the front two gables we have 2 'flares'. The top flare is really a return and is done with roofing shingles as the angle was too acute to apply the hardi-shingle gradually like we did on the bottom.
