Had an unusual architectural feature crop up this past week .
Big stone fireplace chimney directly in front of an arched top window .
The mason and builder had already flashed with lead sheet and the cedar shingles up to the back of the chimney .
I started making up a cricket on Friday . More pictures tomorrow night after the work is completed .
Replies
Was the architect insane?
That chimney still has a lot higher up to go to clear all those ridges and get draw. I can imagine the dormer with the round top window being a nice decoration, but with just masonry to look at and only a sliver of light coming in, that is a waste of effort and resource.

Paul,
I can't believe they wouldn't eliminate this one window out of the 6 that are built into the main roof .
I came onto this project late in the game , or I would have been more insistant that the stone chimney should be thru flashed , even without the added window unit .
The masons still have 18' to I think . They threw me this add on when I arrived to put copper on the arched window roofs .
I'll call when I'm done here to look at your project .
Walter
If you were to want to see it on google earth, it is at the end of Aldrich Lane SW side of the island. He owns most of that point. The particular house is on the west end of the knob.

Paul ,
Just got home from the Folk Festival in Bangor .
Thanks , I'll get a chance to look at it tomorrow .
Walter
I have always enjoyed following your threads, but hey, how was that folk fest?
Had to check out their website.
Wow, Clinton Fearon, I saw the Gladiators at least 25 years ago. Legendary. Mike
Small wheel turn by the fire and rod, big wheel turn by the grace of god.
Clinton was the last act we saw yesterday .
QUITE exceptional in all respects . A truly great performer with a tremendous group of musicians !
Morning Walter,
How's this project coming along?
Hope the weather there is as lovely as it's been here this last week. Nothing quite so nice as the onset of Fall in my mind.
Best,
Steve

Steve ,
I just got on line a few minutes ago !
That little project is done , coupled with a bit of swearing , and some cut fingers .
Theres no way that dormer and window should have even been placed there , but it won't leak . The window being trimmed added to the difficulty of getting the metal in place properly .
I'm on to the dormer roofs . This is a great stretch of weather we're having lately , in the best time of the year , by far .
Best , Walter
Yeah buddy, that was a ruff one from what I saw.
Lousy ##### carpenters.... LOL
I really try to make Grant's work easier when I build them eyebrows, knowing HOW the copper needs to be attached helps..we had one so far that both of us kinda dropped the ball, we were rushed and an archy got involved, and the damm window wouldn't quite work.
I like rewrapping existing dormers, but some of these from scratch ones can be a challange to get right.
Been making a jig that mimics the roof slope and working to that, but them big ones take up some space in the shop by god.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

If the archy hadn't insisted on placing that window there it would have been better all around .
The carpenters did a pretty good job overall , except I wished I could have flashed into the wall under the window prior to window and trim going on .
Got to head to Bangor in a few minutes to try and find a guy to help this weekend on a slate strip / asphalt lay down , before I head to the Coast to work on dormers .
Walter
Good luck on yer search for help, I wish I could come up and play.
Grant said I have a cedar roof in the works, I'm saving gas money just to GET there.
I did sell a small bathroom remod with cherry cabs, all solid wood and Shaker Style..I love working with Cherry, makes the hou se smell nice...funny when the wood stove is lit and the dust settles, it makes ya hungy for cherry pie.

I've got a project you might want to do for me -- from the comfort of your shop .
I need a base made for a large slate slab for my recently retired bride to use as a potting bench .
I'll take some pictures and get dimensions this weekend if you'd have an interest .
Walter
Walter,Oops, sorry, I meant the dormers, and not just this oddball one. Glad to hear all is going along smoothly. Aside from the cuts and the swearing. LOLWas thinking of you the other day, when reading about the goings on in Matinicus http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/23/us/23lobster.html?_r=1&scp=1sq=matinicus&st=cseNot too far from Vinalhaven it looks. And, yes, it's hard to beat the crisp apples and approach of Halloween for my money.Best,

Is there any steel going in that chimney?
I'm not sure what you're asking ??
he's looking for rebar for some reason
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Paul ,
Thats what I thought , but it's not my project -- so I don't know what was specced .
I do know that it would have been much better if I'd thru flashed it .
Walter
Yes on the thru flashing esp in that kind of location where snow can drift in and pile up. I would have wanted to take that window out too, and run in under it.but one advantage of this is that it will divert flow of water from above

Hey Walter -
Don't want to hijack, but this doesn't warrant a thread of it's own:
I was kinda pumped up today. Went to look at some work on a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home. They wanted to replace a portion of the roof with copper. When I got there I found a 100 y/o flat seam terne roof in excellent condition with a hole in it. We're gonna patch the hole. The owner about had a heart attack when I told him I wouldn't tear the original roof off and put new copper on - that there was lot's of life left.
But, I got a free tour of a really cool home and made friends with a really cool home owner.
I couldn't get a good vantage point to take any pictures from outside and I thought it might be rude if I started flashing away inside. But we'll be back. Looks like we've got the job as the caretakers.copper p0rn
Grant ,
I'd love to see some pictures of whatever you're able to photograph !!
Super that you were able to do a job for way less cost than an owner anticipates . Makes you look like the savior in their eyes .
I'll post some pics in a bit of the copper roofs I'm starting to install .
Best , Walter
Just wondering if they are putting vertical rebar in. Looks like ( can't remember now,it was yesterday) thin
paver type blocks set vertically around the flue. It's just that you don't see to many honest to goodness
stone chimneys anymore. I was wondering if the steel was required.
Thats not something I deal with often . I doubt if there is code requirements for that . Flue sizing and air space are things the State would deal with , but iron -I'm not aware .
Steve ,
Here are a few of the dormer roofs going on .

their siding looks better than their curved trim on the dormers.
and as always the copper looks good.
Mike,
Thanks for looking in . You're right the flare for the shingles looks and works really good . The window trim is weaker .
I'm learning a lot with the copper installs . When I get on the front side I should be up to speed .
Walter
It's been perfect weather for that kind of work - finally!ask the carps what they are using for the curved fascia fronts on those barrel dormers over the windows.

A few from the front side of the house .
Paul ,
They used primed select pine , but they didn't biscuit the pieces together .

Walter, Thanx for posting this job. The wood trim is a bit lacking but your work looks good, as always.I am surprized a trim package was not ordered with the windows. I have found, over the years, it is cheaper and more accurate to order trim than to site build.Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Chuck ,
I was as surprised as you are . The balance of the project is really well done , but that facet is weak .
Thanks for checking in . Have a safe and happy weekend .
Best , Walter
Yeah, the way that joint shows, it will get worse with time.
But most of their work looks decent, some even overkill.

You love to solder, dontcha?copper p0rn
Grant ,
I'll be leaving a lot of those seams barea**ed !
I'll solder the back seams and patches and the top narrow panel seams , but leave the rest .
It's got Grace Ultra underneath , and quite steep on the sides so as a wise sage from KY once told me -- no worries mate .
Thanks for your ear from time to time . Took these at $ 2128 and will do just fine !!
Best , Walter
I was talking about the valley where you have those missing triangles. I lay a separate segmented valley instead of forcing the roof across the valley. Probably equals out - more folding for less soldering.copper p0rn
I'm a slate man trying to teach myself how to do copper work .
I'll only need to solder up 3 to 4 inches on those seams , since they are going to leave only 3/4" of copper showing when they put on the red cedars .
I thought I might do it like you said , but I started this way and I think it will be fine wy=hen completed .
Walter
Oh. I wasn't being critical. I just hate solder and will spend all day figuring out how to do a fold that doesn't need solder.copper p0rn
Grant ,
I need to spend a week with you and work for a trade for all the knowledge I'd get . Maybe this Winter if you could stand to have an old griz around !!!
No I knew you weren;t being critical , we use different approaches most of the time to axchieve good results .

one question though just noticed in you latest photos all the oil from your hands discolored the copper how long will you be able to see that and is there something you could use to wipe it off. or does it just go away? or nobody cares?
here most everyone i've seen wears gloves to avoid that
no biggy just curious
Mike ,
I did take a bunch of house pictures that I'll put up soon .
I was away on another Island last week , so kinda outa sync with my picture posting .
In a couple more weeks when we have some rain those roofs will all be turning brownish and hand prints won't be detected then . If it were ogee gutter on a ranch down low I might take more precautions , but when the HO returns at Thanksgiving it will look brownish and blend with the cedars quite nicely.

Simple Cal -- an architect designed it that way !!
I tried to get the builder to remove it and sheathe it in , but whadda I know I'm just a dumb roofer !!
Walter, I've got a friend who had a house framed. No one thought about skylight placement-except for even distribution across the ceiling. One over the center of the living area, one in the center of an adjacent sitting area and one in the center of the dining area (all in a vaulted greatroom).
Two have a sky view. One you can see if the smoke is coming out the chimney.
Used to be showing up was half the game.
Now I guess you have to add planning to the mix.
