I tore out and am about to replace my deck that wraps around the back of my house. My siding is board and batten and appears to have white foam board (about 1/2″) underneath. There is no sheathing or house wrap from what I can tell.
There was also a cedar skirt board the wraps around the entire house. I have removed the cedar where the deck will be and my goal is to attach the deck ledger directly to the rim band of the house. My idea is the put a peel and stick flashing covering the rim band and the try to feed z flashing back up under the siding. This z flashing will then wrap over top of the ledger board. I am not sure if I should put the z flashing in front of or behind the foam board. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has any other ideas of how to flash this better, that would be great as well. I have included some pictures to help.

I have not seen many homes in my day without wood sheathing. If I understand it correctly your 3/8" thick? foil faced? white bead board (EPS) is your weather resistant barrier (WRB).
based on my above assumption....I would put wide strip of ice shield or wide flashing tape. Followed by ledger. I think you have the correct procedure with flashing tape covering the ledger with Z flashing on top. Problem is you will need to tape and Z flash (and tyvek tape) the seam where the foil EPS (vinyl siding backer board?) meets. It would be same way as flashing T-111 sheets stacked on top of each other.
Thanks for your reply. I think I will end up doing similar to what you said. I won't be able to remove the siding to tape the top of the z-flashing though. I am going to try to slide as much of it behind the foam as possible. I will also flash above the deck boards, so I think with both, I should be okay on water intrusion.
