Here’s the situation
1. 30 year old apartment building
2. Second floor apartment
3. Floating trusses
4. 1st. time this is occurring in this area (center) of building. Has occurred on the east end of the apartment building several years ago.
5. Solution in the past, install crown molding to ceiling only and let it float up and down the wall.
6. Was a real pain finding something solid to nail to the last time.
7. I was thinking of installing something flat that has a profile on the outer edge against the ceiling first, then nailing the crown to that. Call it a built up or 2 piece trim.
8. Has anyone ever tried this idea and if so what did you use. I don’t want to get carried away with trim and over power these rooms since the ceilings are 8ft. and the rooms are 10X12.
9. The existing trim in the room is stained Hollywood style. The Crown molding will be your standard run of the mill style and painted.
Thanks, charlie

Sounds good to me. Use a little PL putting up the first piece, maybe rip a back bevel nailer to place behind the finish ones, and stick it all up with cross hatched nails from the pneumatic.
So - you like small crown and large print, eh? You must not be a lawyer. They like small print and large crowns
