TO All:
It’s been 11 years since I’ve framed a house and natually along with my endurance my memory has failed a bit also. I seem to recall when framing the first floor system we would put a double joist underneath wherever there was a paralell wall on the first floor. I think I should at least put a single joist here but it seems it would make heating, plumbing runs difficult. I also thought of just blocking under the walls to allow more room for the different runs.
What’s everyone think of this?
Thanks
Roy

I've seen that called out on prints before, but have never seen anyone actually do it.
I wonder if that's a regional thing, like strapping ceilings? Is it common for any of you guys to do that?
Ever wonder what's wrong with people who spend $2 or more for a little bottle of Evian water? Spell Evian backwards.
It`s usually specked on the plans. When left to me I prefer to double joist unless circumstances such as those you mentioned don`t allow. I`ve seen instances where blocking actually sinks along with the wall.

Yes, you should have double joists under all partitions (and under leading edges of tubs, etc.). A nice way to handle this while maintaining drilling room for wiring and plumbing is to space the joists apart with some blocking, as most holes can/should be near the center of the partition plate.
If it's a bearing partition (and how many aren't actually carrying some load from above?) you MUST double up (under CABO at least) and if they are separated as I suggest they must be blocked min. 4'-0" o.c.

my take? Unless it's called out on the drawings or structural notes, the subfloor "holds" it. Most jobs get an xtrajoist or two anyway because of framing around plumbing, recessed lights etc.
no turn left unstoned
I throw in a joist under our partitions for a good nailer, and doubles for point loads like the base of stairs. Just a thingy, i guess. Most of our partitions, if not all, are usually non-load bearing though. Have gone through on back-out and tossed in full depth blocking at 2' o.c. also. Subs haven't said anything, probably cuz they are cussing out all the floor beams and posts on the main and loft floors for their runs.
