I have to put down a 3/4″ prefinished T&G HW floor in an old house. The floor is now covered with old pine T&G, but has no subfloor. The current floor is is very sturdy but contains a substantial cup (1/4 inch /ft up to 1 1/2 inches). I am thinking of laying tapered plywood down to fill in the majority of the cup but wondered if there is any type of filler that I could use to feather-edge the plywood to the existing floor. My concern is that leveling compound would interfere with the flooring nails when installing the finish floor.
Thanks for the help.

Try using varying thicknesses of roofing felt to taper back the area after the ply. You're on the right track:) Also, run the new opposite of the old for better strength.
