Need to install some 4×4 tumbled stone tiles adjacent to a wood floor. The tiles are 3/8″ thk and the wood is 5/8″ thk. Concrete slab. How do I make up the height difference? I’ll gain about 1/8″ with the thinset, but what do you do with the other 1/8″? And yes that much of a difference would bother me. The area to be tiled is about 6 ft x 8 ft.

taller notched trowel ...
mix the thinset stiffer ...
tap the tiles down to the right height ...
the taller ridges combined with the tapping should give the appropriate coverage you need.
1/8th isn't a whole lot to make up.
Or ... trowel as usual ...
and back butter each tile as you go .... for the added thickness.
Small area .. shouldn't be too hard.

My first thought was deeper notches...just wanted to see if there was a hidden error there. Thanks.

only thing that might bite ya is a loose mix settling too much.
For a larger area I'd recommend working in sections ... so the tight mix don't flash over before you get to it all .... but that area's probably just big enough to work up a good sweat ...
