Floore and more

| Posted in Photo Gallery on October 25, 2003 01:41am

This is the Foto-documentation of a job finished in Hamburg/Germany. The wide planks are from www.dinesen-jels.dk (Denmark). The existing Cassette Floors (Oak veneer, with walnut rim) was a bitch to sand and polish – there was hardly 1/16″ left of veneer. So we had to be VERY careful. No risk no fun.

The casings and baseboards are a one of a kind special order (very high). This is the most beautiful shop in Hamburg, as far as clothing goes. Look at the antique display furniture from England.

The new fishbone oak massive Parquet was newly laid with Wenge´trim, and square dominoes with stars of maple/walnut. Just curious what the american pros have to say to this…

Greetings , Mathias www.raulfcarpenters.com

Yes Andy, the nail looks like it was made by the same guys, doesn´t it. Looking on your site I saw that you do custom staining after finish sanding of floors. We do that in Hamburg too - it is a tricky thing. We are the only ones around here with the guts to do it... all the other guys shun away from the risks. Blodging, unevenness, not true to made samples...It is good money, but there is of course a reason for it. Do you tell your customers that it will eventually wear through?  Mathias

        Matt

I've never seen the stain wear through. Why do you think that happens for you?

I use oil based stains and mainly a moisture cure finish which is a tricky finish to apply but the best in my opinion.

Although I'm not primarily a floor guy I've done several trillion square feet in my time. Enough to sort of know what I'm doing when necessary...as in, not getting my floor finish contractor in when I need him.

And yeh, the nail I sent you looks so much like the ones you sent me....although yours were heavier.

There were some nails in the beams here I absolutly couldn't get out they were so huge (spikes).

To get off the subject a bit.....hows the music in Hamburg? My guess is its real good...after all thats where the Beatles started out and like I said the one thing we have in common besides building, is that John Lennon lived in HAmburg and here in Cold Spring Harbor.

        BE well

                  Namaste'

Andy, I´ll have to phrase it differently: The stain wears through...I did not mean the stain bleeding through the finish - but the other way around. The finish being abraded by wear (leather soles with garden soil/sand...) in the most frequented spots (entrances, door-ways) and then you have the naked stain, which only sits on top of the wood surface. If that goes, you have naked spots, the bare wood. And if you want to do a restain in that part - headache. That´s what I meant. Bleaching by UV-sunrays not to mention. You know, we are worrysome Germans...

The music scene in Hamburg was Europes best, aside from London and Paris of course. All the labels were situated in Hamburg and of course everybody had to come here. Hamburg is the second largest city (runner-up to Berlin) of Germany (little less than 2 million citizens her). Now that the iron-curtain has fallen (seems like 14 years have passed without me noticing), the music production guys are packing it in to move to the new/old capital - B E R L I N.

But still, we have a couple of excellent clubs here...for every taste. Btw.: In younger days (end of 70´s) I was a DJ, and from time to time I still do my stuff in a bar called Hefner´s. (Was there till 5 in da morning last night, and pretty pooped today) Jazz, Soul, Philly - the stuff I collect. And only vinyl - please... http://www.bar-hefner.de

Try using a moisture cure finish if you have that stuff there.....best applied when its humid or moist out believe it or not.

Far as vinyl goes......funny you should mention it.....I was going through all my "records" a week or so ago. I have hundreds.

Was wondering if any of them were worth anything. I have some pretty rare stuff such as the first Mothers (Zappa) albums....unreleased Beatles fan club album put out on Apple records...etc etc.

I looked on Ebay and I see one of my records just sold for $175 US dollars....the Beatles not for sale album for the fan club members.

I even have (somewhere) the John and Yoko album that was sold in a brown paper bag with them naked on the cover.

I also have a record of folkies on it with Dylan using the pen name, "Blind Boy Grunt".

            Startin' to feel old...lol

Clubs you say? I remember going to the Steve Paul Scene (ever hear of it?)in Manhatten when I was 17 (under age) to see on stage in this small club...Hendrix, Morrison and I forget who else was there that night....Morrison was all over the stage drunk as a Mother f'r singing or rather yelling about......well...I can't even describe what he was saying here....Hendrix was totally wasted as well....They did a tune of Jimi's known as Red House..blew me away.....I actually years later found a bootleg of that night that I have.

That really drunk tune was named "Morrison's Lamant" on the bootleg copy I have. What a night that was. Almost beat out all the dozens of shows I saw at the Fillmore East like the night there was a fire in the corner grocery store that filled the Fillmore up with smoke and The Who were playing....The cops came in and grabbed Pete's mike while he was doing Magic Bus....Pete kicked the cop in the head and they took the Who out and loaded em in paddy wagons and off to jail....I was in the first row that night and spaced outta my head....

and the night I saw Elton at Madison Square Garden and Lennon showed up and the two of em did "I wanna Hold Your Hand" and others.......

            Be the daze

Not to butt in but here's the amended photo. I had to twinkle it up a little to be able to read it anyways so maybe everyone can enjoy it more....

it'll be good to seen the trim work on the walls. There are some details teasing me.....
