We are struggling to come up with an appropriate flooring for a hallway and bathroom in an old summer cottage in Northern Wisconsin to top an old concrete slab on grade. I’m fairly certain there is no vapor barrier below the slab (installed approx. 1940.). Moreover the cottage is not heated and closed up for 8 moths of the year. We would like to replace the old musty wool carpet and sheet vinyl but it doesn’t seem prudent to replace in kind as these have most likely just captured the moisture. Should we try to place an epoxy membrane? Nothing else is well sealed in the cottage so I’m a bit concerned about adding this on the floor. Would appreciate input on possible remediation approaches or at a minimum ‘breathable’ flooring covers.
