We’re in the process of fixing up the cabin, in central Minnesota…no heat, various climate changes- Right now, the only floor is painted floorboards ( T&G) , with carpet in the kitchen and living room, bare painted floors in the bedrooms, and linoleum in the bath. The kitchen cabinets will be maple, and there is a nice center island with beadboard and a butcher block top. What kind of floor is going to be the best value, and least troublesome to install? Engineered floor, 3/8, 1/2 or 9/16″…, in which there will be a few transitions? Or a large tile…how thin of tile backer could we get away with? Parquet? If nothing is decided, we’ll go with linoleum (not a huge fan).
The floor to be installed is both the kitchen area and the fireplace/tv/sitting area, 12 feet by 22, with a 3×4 “hall” between the bedrooms and bath.
Any favorites? Any no-no’s? (besides laminate)….??
We’re hoping to have it all done by memorial day, Pontoon season is coming.

i just did a prefinished hardwood floor 3/8" a bruce product... i used seconds or 3rds... was about $2sf laid it over 15lb felt... used extra strips of felt to even up the floor some... and stapled it down i also glued it like you would a floating floor which slowed me down some... i did a 20x20 room in about 6 hrs i didn't buy any of their trim parts i put it where carpet use to be and the base was high enough to slip it under... for the $$ spent i think it looks great ... only prob i ran into with the seconds was a few strips the grove wasn't cut right... might have had 5% waste if that.... the bad stuff i trimmed on and used in the closet...
i'll use it again....

Was that from lumber liquidators? What gauge staples were you using?
5% waste is still not bad for the price.
