Grant ,
I got an e mail with pics for a roof repair on a house 2 hours North of here .
Thought you’d like this one of the chimney / valley interface .

Too bad they didn't move that waste vent right up against the high corner of the chimney where the valley dumps. Have fun.

Don't know if I'll have time this Fall to do any work up there , but it's fun to look at the pictures they sent !!
I see the leak!

Paul ,
I'm not sure that area has any leakage . Thought that flashing at the chimney base was unusual though .

crazy.
Do you build a saddle behind it at the same angle as the valley?
seems there is a divergent valley delta plain behind it now already. From here, it looks like the right one has less pitch, but it catches a greater flow of water and ice from the taller roof. There is probably a broken seam there caused by it holding ice build-up.That, or something was carelessly done .It's always hard to deal with bad design.

Jim,
Haven't seen the house in person yet , just some e mail pictures .
Not sure I can make it up there this Fall .

Had one similar a few years ago. It was a very wide chimney that the roof eaves died against, no cricket and years of leaks. I had to replace the framing around the fireplace. When I pulled the header apart a sea of carpenter ants came running out, most I've ever seen. Freaked the customer out to see this swarm of black going across their lawn.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
What does the rod & turnbuckle do? Stabilize the chimney or is there a hidden TV antenna I cannot see?

"If it scratches, I etch it!"
Stabilization only .
All that is missing is a window behind the chimney.

They want one installed !!

Only joking ! Thought you were kidding about my other thread .
I was kidding, but I obviously was not necessarily shocked. I have had to talk folks out of crazy stuff several times.
