Hey Guys,
I’ve been seeing alot of articles regarding ‘superinsulating’ homes, and specifically rigid foam board installed over ply sheathing. I’ve never done this yet, or even seen it out here in Calif, so I am curious as to how they typically attach the siding. Are they nailing through the form into the sheathing or is the foam actually holding the siding fastners? Anyone ever done this, and if so how?
Thanks!

Lot of different ways and means depending on type of siding and your climate. Often use strapping ( callled furring out your way) over the foam and nailed int the studs for point of attachment for siding, and to create a rainscreen wall.
The foam can be nailed on with plasti-cap nails.
CA sees a lot of stucco which can be applied over the foam in typical manner

So it's not continuous like they always show in pics? The foam that is.
Longer nails with no furring (strapping).
Some say you can nail siding directly through continous rigid foam up to 1" thick. I've never done it though and am not about to try.We always nail strapping to the perimeter of the walls, and around all windows and doors. Then rip the 4x8 foam panels into 2' wide strips and install it between strips of vertical strapping. This gives us solid nailing for the siding and trim.
I don't know "they" and have not seen whatever pictures you are speaking of.It comes in 4x8 sheets.I suppose you may be confusing this with fanfold foam panels which is not for insulation, but to provide support behind vinyl siding
