I HAVE A JOB WHICH WILL REQUIRE THE APPLICATION OF A FOAMBOARD PRODUCT
SUCH AS STYROFOAM TO AN EXTERIOR FOUNDATION WALL FOR INSULATING PURPOSES.
ABOUT 3 FEET OF THE BOARD WILL BE EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS AND WILL REQUIRE
A PROTECTIVE COATING OF SOME TYPE. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A COMMERCIALLY
AVAILABLE PRODUCT (GO AHEAD, NAME SOME NAMES) WHICH IS DURABLE. I WOULD
IMAGINE THAT A PARGE COAT OF MORTAR COULD BE USED BUT I’M LOOKING FOR
SOMETHING THAT WOULD SPEED UP APPLICATION. OBVIOUSLY THE PRODUCT WOULD
HAVE TO HAVE EXCELLENT ADHESION CHARACTERISTICS. I CAN JUST IMAGINE A
SKIM COAT OF MORTAR SLIDING OFF THE FOAMBOARD (OF COURSE WHEN THE CUSTOMER
IS WATCHING).
THANKS,
J.B.

J.B. There are a multitude of coatings available. You should inquire in the local area first since it is nice to have instant access to not only product but to customer service and hopefully some finished projects to look at.
Here are some we have used:
Quick Crete "foamcoat"
Grailcoat http://www.grailcoat.com
Retro Tek
Flex base from several EIFS manufacturers that is flexible and waterproof.
Thoro products (mixed according to verbal instructions from tech support)
We have attempted others, but if they don't come to mind they probably failed the litmus test...cost cost cost performance.
Whatever you smear on the foam, be sure to use a rasp to roughen the surface just before applying it.
A few other companies that we intend to investigate are
Earth Kote
National coatings out of Florida.(spray on with airless, hard shell and waterproof, plus material cost is less than trowel on products)
