Foam insulation question

Royalt | Posted in Energy, Heating & Insulation on September 17, 2007 01:10am

Greeetings from NY I have been looking into that “Tiger Foam” to sprey on a box in a basement . Is that product any good or is there another one that would work better

BTW I got some advise here a year ago about insulating an apt . I used rR-21 walls and 38 in the cieling (2 Layers of 19 ) I used 1″ foam rigid and furred them out before drywall . it was the best thing I ever did . The gas bill is great

 Thanks again for the advise

 Thanks in advance

Roy

    Greetings Royalt,

This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again which will increase it's viewing.

Perhaps it will catch someone's attention that can help you with advice.

    Cheers

        Sure.

What is the box in the basement for and what size is it?

So what you are wanting to do is insulate the perimeter of the above ground area of the basement walls?

You got it cuz  i was wonderin if any of you ever heard of that product called "Tiger Foam "  and if you heard if it was any good or nor por if you could reccomend one . i was always under the impression that FG was best to use but the airspace kills any benefit that the GF gains I dont know if a foam installer would want to bother with a small job like that

            Regards

            Roy

The description of 'box' used in the first post kind of thru me off understanding what you were wanting to insulate. I take it now that you are speaking of the areas between the floor joists of the first floor sitting on the sill abutting the rim.

Spray foam would work well there in that sealing any possibility of air infiltration being more important in this common troublespot than the subject of R-values.

In the archive listing of old threads on Breaktime there are a number of threads mentioning Tiger Foam that may be informative.

If you scroll up in the upper left corner of your screen there is an advanced search function

            Post New

            Advanced Search

that upon clicking will take you to a page of instructions directing you to previous threads dealing with whatever you type in the search bar which is found on that page.

If you type in 'tiger foam',  'rim joist insulation' or other keywords of a subject matter you'll get a supply of data from those old threads.

As you'll read some advocate a light coat of sprayfoam followed by pieces of cut foamboard depending on the ease of accessibility and depending on the size of the basement some a smaller aerosol spray as GreatStuff coupled with foamboard for the DIY.

            Pleasant reading to you.

SOP here now is to inset the rim joist about 1.5" and then apply that much rigid foam on the outside to fill the resulting notch.

I went to college for five years to learn that. Can't just tell you -- wouldn't be fair.
