I am looking for information on building folding or collapsable stairs that pull down from the ceiling to get to my attic. Could anyone please tell me how to do this or where to find more information on building them.

Typically they come pre-fabricated...is there a reason you want to construct them yourself?
*Most home stores will carry them. Usually they have 3 styles, good, better, best. Skip the wood ones, and spring for the lighter weight, stronger aluminum. If you have a ceiling joist bay that runs in a direction that allows for alot of clear space above, there also is non-folding type that slide up and down......though I've never installed that kind myself. If you can go parallel to the joists, it'll be an easier install. Not a big problem if you have to go perpendicular to the joists, just more framing. Remember to pick a ceiling area where the folded stairs can full swing down. I once did an install where I measured from the wall.......forgetting about the extra wide door trim.......and was lucky enough to make it by about 1/2 inch! I just would have had to cut and reframe back the extra space.....but I was glad to not patch a small strip of drywall into a ceiling that day! Good Luck, Jeff
