Hey all….lookin` for some input here. I`m building a 2 1/2 story addition…bottom floor to be a garage with a 6″ slab floor sitting level with existing grade. Foundation to go down 42″ below grade. The architect is calling for footing drains. Is this even necessary? There is nothing below garage, not even a crawl space. I dont know that I`ve ever come across this situation in the past, if I did, I took for granted footings get footing drains.

Does the spec call for the drains to "go to light", to a sump, or a french drain?

All I can surmize is that the elevation of the building floor is at, near, or below that of the surrounding topography, and there is the possibility of water diverting and sitting at the building perimeter. Typical slab construction with trench footings does not usually incorporate drains in our region.
