Hello all,
I have a client who wants me to install 3 hardwired lamp posts they bought from home dumpo along their driveway. I’m no stranger to doing outdoor wiring and setting posts, but this project is a new one to me.
The manufacturer’s instructions specify nothing about footing depth/size. The base is about a 10″ hexagon with 3 half inch expanding concrete anchor bolts supplied.
My instinct is to pour a 12″ by 42″ footing, but that really seems like overkill for this cast aluminum lamp post (barely weighs 30 pounds).
I’m in SE Mass and I’m concerned about frost affecting the post base and tilting everything.
I’m sure there’s someone out there who has installed these before….. what did you use for the footing base?
Thanks!

I haven't done what you are doing before, but as your post is about ready to fall off the bottom of the list unanswered, I'll tell you what I think and if nothing else, it'll move you up the list:
I would use Sonotubes and pour concrete bases that go below the frost line and then bolt the bases of the lamp posts to the concrete. Like you say, if you don't do that, your lights will be heaved by frost and they'll be all out of plumb in a year.
