wear and more wear on the rounded edge of countertop . is there a way to apply paint/wax to make this look better? the surface is almost completely worn so the color is about gone.

Fixing something like that is extremely difficult. If you can color match the paint, you may be able to make the wear part less noticeable, but I doubt you can make it completely disappear. If you're losing the color, you've worn through a couple of layers of the Formica.
The decorative part of plastic laminate is very thin, once it's worn off that's it. Even if you could paint it to match you very soon find out how hard the original was as paint will be gone soon. The brown core of the laminate will function a long time without the colored layer is the only comfort I can offer.
