formica top/ undermount sink how two?

can someone help me save 5000! my wife wants a undermount sink which means granite or solid surface,so by the time we do granite plus all the island to match were probably at 5k. i’m puking at that thought.i’m looking for a way to do a wood substrate with formica and undermounting the sink. the trick is that area around the sink. i’ve come up with a couple of ideas, but all pretty time consuming, anybody done something like this and how. thanks larry

Is your name really Larry?
Sure, her request can be met. But it won't be pretty (four square edges) and it won't stay dry more than a couple of months. Have you considerd a tile counter? Ah come on Larry ... don't you love her? Remember what you used to say when you were spoonin' ... "Honey, I'll do anything you ask..." So just go ahead and let her pick out the stone she likes.

Appartently you don't rememebr the problem we had on the forum 8-10 months ago with the other larry ... he almost caused the system to crash.

BTW with in the last year (I think last spring) this came up.
If I remember correctly Mongo posted a system that he used, but it might have been someone else.
Try the wilsonart website. (or visit a countertop place that retails wilsonart products) They have a relatively new system to do exactly what you are describing.
Check the online index. FHB had an article doing this using epoxy the last couple of months.
You're right Bill ... I forgot about that article.
But I still think Mrs Budget deserves the granite she wants, just for living with him.

Hey Barry, have you tried this product or have you seen it done?
This thing has me thinking about DW's new kitchen. I hadn't considered an undermount sink...untill now.
I have seen 1 installed, haven't used it myself.
The local Sunderlands has been showing it around. Looks alright but I haven't done any laminate jobs for quite awhile.

That was quick. Thanks Barry. I'm thinking of playing with some black UHMW plastic as a trim edge for the hole and inventing my fasteners. Thanks.
thanks for the web site, there is a counter top shop here in town that has a display with one, priced it to me for 700.00 ! so i will get a hold of the manf. and see what they run. thanks larry
Go for a solid, oiled, butcherblock counter.
But keep it well oiled, especially around the sink cut out. If you do this, it'll last indefinitely.
You can build your own countertop out of 2x2 maple pretty easily. Just make sure you bore for threaded rod on both sides of where you're going to cut the sink opening, and figure on leaving those rods in the counter permanently (counter-bore and plug the entry holes; but don't glue in the plugs--you may want to tighten up on the nuts from time to time over the years...).
