What is the best method to insulated a basement foundation. I live in Massachusetts and would like to go with 2″ rigid foam on the exterior of the cement walls. I have heard of codes that do not allow this down south because of insects boring through the foam – any problems with that up north? Also how does one finish off the exposed foam above grade without having the foundation extend out beyond the siding?
Thanks!

exterior foam is a joke... the termites and carpenter ants will thank you..
interior insulation is my choice...
the current addition we're doing will have 3"EPS Performaguard... treated with borates.. and bonded with 1/2" blueboard to confrom with the firecode requirements..
all of the houses we've built since 1975 have interior insulation in the basements..about half of them also have Styro-SM or Foamular UNDER the slabs too.....
lots of houses built with EXTERIOR foam insulation since the '70's...have had the insulation cut back to the grade line so the entire exposed part of the foundation is now UNINSULATED... how dumb is that?
b but hey, whadda i no ?
