I understand the Valley-board method of framing a dormer into a roof with one slope. How would I frame a dormer into a gambrel roof at the intersection of the two slopes. I could probably frame it in by the seat of my pants, but would appreciate some expertise and a diagram.

Wade, I'd build a stud wall on the floor, the outside face flush with the wall below. Set the rafters from the top plate of the wall to the ridge, in plane with the upper gambrel slope. Make sure you use rafter ties on these rafters.
Build the cheek walls on top of lower gambrel rafters.
