Anyone know a really good book that explains how to use a framing square? Or better yet a video? I saw Steve Peters roof framing videos for sale in this magazine, are they any good?

Lee Valley tools sells a great little book which is a reprint of an early book on using a framing square. Covers all the different rafter tables as well as octagonal layout and all the rest.

If you're using a Swanson Speed Square, Amazon/Toolcrib carries a pretty good instuctional video along with the "Blue Book" for $12.99.
HEY! Why doesn't my speed square have black diamonds?!?!?
It will soon, Swanson's upcoming new model measures 38.4" and has a black diamond in the middle. ;o)

I heard that they will be coming out with TWO new models soon. One, as you describe, is 38.4" long, with a diamond in the middle.
The other is still just 12", but it has a telescoping piece in each of the two short sides. Each of these slides out to precisely 19.2 inches, and each has a black diamond on the end. In this case, the diamonds serve two purposes -- the commonly known one, and they also serve to keep the ends of the telescoping pieces from getting lost.
Vast projects should not be founded on half vast ideas.
a stanly square comes with a little book with it.
