Brother in law pulled his boiler and replaced it with a water heater. The water heater is fine and does agreat job heating his 3100 sq.ft. house up here in the artic tundra..
But I have a hard time passing up free..
Yes I’ve got in floor radiant heat but I too am using a water heater, Plus I’ve got a back up forced air furnace..
But Free?
Is it likely to sit around untill I tire of it and throw it out myself?

It would not be too difficult to find someone who could really use a newer boiler. At the very least, if it's not too old, save the burner, probably for someone else also. Saving the whole unit and storing same, your heirs will probably throw it out.
2 days after he tosses the boiler, his water heater will spring a leak. :)
It's a small compact one.. much smaller than my forced air furnace.. wouldn't take up much space.
(can you tell how much I like free stuff?)
Why did he replace it?
it was not a good match with his in floor radiant system..
It would cycle on, create too much heat to the point where the output had to be cooled down and then shut itself off. Set at the lowest temp the house turned into a sweat box.
He replaced it with a single gas water heater and the house has been comfortable since..
Well, it's free. I'd probably take it and store it and about the time I needed it I would find out it was all rusted out and THEN get rid of it.
Kind of funny... I had a brand new gas hot water heater that I stored until it was too rusty to use.
my cheapest garbage dump is other peoples storage.
if I can convince someone to take something away for free, better yet they come and get it
thats money in my pocket
