Jim,
I sent you an e-mail last night about the magazines. Wondering if you where able to get it??
Thanks,
No, I don't think I did. Unless your real first name is David and last name same as a bird of prey. But he was from N.C.
Which issue(s) you need?
I am trying to balance out the requests so everyone gets a little (always nice to get a little, huh?). Loren Wallace for president.

Hey Jim,
I posted down below looking to trade or buy to fill in my collection. I'd be interested in anything between 42-100. There are a few others I'm missing, too. If you have any of these left unclaimed, let me know. Obviously, I'd be happy to pay shipping at a minimum.
Thanks,

E mail me your mailing address again, Kit and I'll put you in the hopper. There are about 5 of you now so everyone will get a few issues. I'm going to give the Monday morning crowd a chance to see this and then start boxing them up mid week.Loren Wallace for president.
Bombs away, fellas! Couldn't send the ones to Canada so those have to wait until we can get to the post office proper, but you Statesiders who asked have incoming!Loren Wallace for president.
Whatever's left I'll take, if anything. Just let me know shipping cost.

They're all gone, Huck, sorry. Gave the last 4 to a group of high schoolers at their career day yesterday.Loren Wallace for president.
Does the post office-Canada comment mean some are on their way to Canada?
Have a good day
Cliffy
Yeah, I think there were 6, or 7 that are on their way. Kathy sent the others from some type of post office satelite which couldn't deal with anything other than domestic. She said she had to go to a real post office to send the package to Canada.
She's away on business so I can't holler downstairs and ask her, but she has probably mailed them by now. If not, I'm sure she has it on her list for Saturday (I have to work or I'd do it myself Sat).
Was that you who asked for them?Loren Wallace for president.
Yes it was me. Thank you plenty in advance. I only found Finehomebuilding in 1990 so i've managed to fill in a few of the issues from the early years. You have had plenty of articles through the years. I mentioned I passed the hip roof article around last spring to my class. Did you not have an article a few years back framing common rafters and you won a 12 pack of your favorite imported beer from your buddy. I don't recall if you said what the beer was so I must ask if it one of the Canadian brews?
Any way have a good weekend and thanks for the issues.
Cliffy (also known as Chris)
I think you have me confused with somebody else. Never wrote about roof framing, although I did have a few things published around 2000.
Anyways, hope you enjoy the magazines (heck, I hope you GET them!).Loren Wallace for president.
Hey I'm over 40 now and my memory isn't what it used to be.
I put the finehomebuilding dvd in and checked. It brings up 6 articles of yours and as you said, nothing about cutting rafters! That is 6 more than me.
I have a couple of ideas for articles but there never seems to be enough time to put them together.
Have a good day

I think Cliffy might be thinking of John Carroll--I know he's written at least one article on hip roof framing...
How did your 4 1/2 weeks of work in 3 weeks go?
I'm working tomorrow (Sunday) if that tells you anything, Mike. The only saving grace is the next job on the schedule is people I've been planning with for about 1.5 years and they are real laid back/nothing phases them kind of folks who really won't mind waiting an extra week to start if that's what happens.
Waking up at 3:30 every morning with various details racing through my head is getting a little old, though.
"John Carroll"? That would be an honor to be confused with him. That's a real carpenter, there. Frikkin' guy is excavating out from under a duplex he owns by hand to make a full basement - once a year or so I get an e mail from him entitled "54,000 buckets and counting" or something. Great guy. Got two books by him on the top shelf of my builders library.
When is your article going to see the light of day?Loren Wallace for president.
So it's not over yet....
What's the job for the nice folks going to be?
I saw a talk by John Carroll at the last JLC live. He did a hip roof demonstration. Pretty interesting since framing isn't my strong suit. 54000 buckets of dirt? Seems like his time could be better spent writing more books. Maybe he'll write one on how to hand-dig a foundation.
I'm pretty sure my article will be in the next issue.
Mastersuite enlargement. First phase of several. Maybe. 6, maybe 8 weeks this go 'round. Could morph into twice that pretty easilly if we get some momentum up. Great site, facing west across a real nice stretch of South Puget Sound. Awesome late afternoon visuals with the occasional oyster barge trudging past. I love working down in that area. Spent several months last year down there on another project and came close to cashing in all our holdings to finally buy something on the salt water - even found a piece Kathy said "well, should we do it?" but backed down and came back here to the forest instead.
I don't remember how many freakin' buckets of dirt it was last time, but yeah, that's what I asked him when he started in with that stuff a few years ago "have you been diagnosed?". But he enjoys it. Calls it "theraputic". Go figure. I prefer napping, myself. Great guy, though.
I'll look for your article, Mike. Then, of course, you'll have to autograph it for me next time we meet. Deal? That's a thrill, man, first time you get published. At least it was for me.
I still think you wrote the best "Drawing Board" I ever read.
Off to bed with a belly full of ice cream and a beautiful woman. Loren Wallace for president.
Aw shucks.
Yeah, I'll sign yours if you sign mine!
Deal.
I have a few signed copies of books here - Myron Ferguson, Jim Tolpin, Gary Katz, Michael Byrne...a few others. One of these days I'll meet John Carroll in the flesh and ask him to sign his two...kind of corney I guess, but those books are well worn and have helped me immensly, least I can do is thank the authors by asking them to autograph their books.Loren Wallace for president.
I hear John Carroll gets 300 dollars per autograph.;o)
A small, unexpected act of kindness, goes a long way.
P.S. It's twice that if you ask him to clamp it in a C clamp before he hands it back to you.(The C clamp acts as a handle, to carry the book home with. he he he)

Hi Jim.
I received your package. The mags made it a long way and are intact. I will be sending you your expenses. Thanks , I'm looking forward to friday night when my kids go to dancing for 2 hours and I have free time to read.
Have a great day
Cliffy
You're very welcome, Cliff. Glad they made it.Ever wonder why "holistic" doesn't start with "w"?
Hey Chris -
Your package arrived the other day. Thanks. I had completely forgotton about it. And a special thanks for the two magazines you sent me. Been thumbing through them. I never even gave it a thought that there would be a Canada specific building mag - fun reading the ads and thinking about the climate driven differences in building practices.
Anyways, thanks again for reaffirming my faith in my fellow carpenters. All in all, an honest bunch. Ever wonder why "holistic" doesn't start with "w"?
