I am about to replace my old aluminum sliding patio door with a new vinyl clad french door. What are the pros and cons of out swing vs. in swing and are there any problematic weather issues for either choice?

If your doors are exposed to rain, as opposed to being under an overhang of some size, outswing doors (mounted on the surface plane of the building) are going to catch rain along the top edge and, by capillary action, transfer it at least as far as the weatherstripping. Potential for leakage. Inswinging doors allow the rain to drip off the drip cap 6" away from the door, and the slanted threshold should take care of whatever lands on the bottom.

this was our dilemma when choosing doors for our master bedroom
it is my understanding that the outswining doors would have the hinges exposed on the exterior. this may or may not be a security issue for you to consider.
we just put some inswing Andersens in our bedroom, and don't have any complaints with them.
My doors will be protected somewhat by an overhanging eve (protrudes approx. 18 ins. beyond my normal roof eves. What about security issues, can outswing doors be orded with concealed hinges? We really like the look of both doors being open with a pocket screen in place...gives a nice open feeling.
Are there any other considerations that I should take into account?
There are fully concealed hinges available that will take care of the security issue, but I don't know if they're available on pre-hung door units. Maybe someone else has an answer for you; could try a good quality (not big box) building supply.Formerly BEMW at The High Desert Group LLC
Order outswing doors and they should come with security hinges or screw a #12 x 2" screw into the door by each hinge leaving 1/2" proud. Close the door until the screws mark the jamb, then drill the marks. Now you got a coonass security door, (g)

The low-security version of hinge for outswing doors has a large tab on one leaf that protrudes into a receiver recess punched into the opposite leaf. The theory is that the hinge leaves cannot slide by each other with the metal parts engaged, when the pin is pulled. A better approach is the use of NRP (non-removeable pin) hinges. I cannot imagine a door shop operation making outswing doors without using one or another of these type hinges. Double doors should have some sort of security cover flange at the outside of the astragal (the full-length fitting along the passive door's latch edge) that prevents tampering with the latch from the outside. Without that, any dope with a butter knife can get inside.
if the doors are exposed to weather they will leak in the middle at the btm there is no way to weatherstrip them tight enough and still be able to open them easily.if there is a cover or porch over them then no problem swinging either way. i suggest going to one of the nicer sliding doors there are some nice wooden doors or another option is to go to one door in the middle and a side light on each side this makes for a nice look and can be weather stripped very well
