freud jigsaw

nctacoma | Posted in Tools for Home Building on March 31, 2009 04:38am

Anybody here using a freud jigsaw?

I need a new jigsaw and don’t really want to spend the money on the good Bosch one.

I found a Freud one on Amazon for $71 or so.

Is it any good?

How long are you going to own this thing? For $60 more you can get top of the line Bosch refurbished with full warranty. If you keep it 6 years that's only $10 per year.

You haven't filled in your profile, so I can't tell if you are a DIYer or in business. If you use it for business, the tax write-off pays 35% - 40% of the difference anyway.

That's such a sweet tool, my dyed-in-the-wool-DeWalt working partner leaves his DW in the truck if he can grab my Bosch instead.

I spent a ridiculous amount of money to buy that saw... and I'm so glad I did.  I use it once in awhile, but I know it is precise and with the correct blade will do EXACTLY what I expect it to do.

Are the reconditioned tools like new? Just wondering.

Are they basicly new tools that had some minor defect that they fixed?

I can see how some things could get by quality control.

Tools that people return after one use?

I've been thinking about getting a Makita 18V because I have the batteries.

      No cord would be nice.

"reconditioned" tools are sometimes ones that were returned for a defect and have been repaired, but most often they are tools returned during the 30-day return window for any reason (or none)at all; didn't like the feel, too big, too small, DW pitched a fit, whatever. The warranty is the same, so I'm glad to save some bucks. There's a CPO Bosch, CPO Makita and CPO Milwaukee.BruceT

The CPO Reconditioned Makita 18V (tool only) is $209! That's why I haven't bought one.

With small tools like a jigsaw I tend to use them upside down, backwards, all sorts of ways. So I figured not having a cord was a good thing.

$209! And no batteries or charger!

I just ordered the reconditioned jigsaw and the reconditioned 12V li-ion Max drill driver. I wanted a small li-ion drill with a chuck. It's two speed also.

Makita 18V is just overpriced and I can avoid the cord on the Bosch.

I haven't yet found a reason to use a jigsaw anywhere where I couldn't plug in. BruceT

It's no problem really. I haven't cut a cord in long time. I would have bought the Makita but $209 is to rich for my blood and the bosch is probably a much better saw.

I think I'm more excited about the drill. I think i have a problem with drills. The makita will make it nine that I have currently.

One more and you will have enough for a drill team. :)

I wrote an article on jigsaws for FHB back in 2005. At the time, the Bosch was about the best of the bunch. The Freud not so much. I own a Festool, but mainly because I'd gotten a great deal on it before doing the FHB article. Post-article, I would have bought the Bosch.

It was on Amazon nine months ago for $49 and if you read down a few posts there weren't many takers even at that price.

April 6, Bosch JS5 top handle jig saw.  $69.

Not their "top of the line," but gets good reviews on Amazon.

Go for the Bosch if you can. I've had good luck with the reconditioned tools. My Bosch jig saw is around 17 years old, I have to use a screwdriver to change blades. It's one of my best power tools. They're worth every penny.

  7. Pelipeth | Apr 07, 2009 01:43am | #16

That's not a place to skimp. For me any way it's one of the most important tools in my arsenal, and the Bosch is the cat's @$$.
