Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.

"when it's not raining"
Whats that, 6 days out of the 9 months of winter?

That's what an Oregonian might think. Somehow the Olympic range breaks up the patterns as they blow in, tearing a big hole in the clouds that sits right over us.... so, we have great weather. Another 35 miles east everything regroups against the Cascade foothills and it gets wet and dark. I worked in the SF Bay Area for 16 years prior to coming here, and while the weather there is friendlier for outdoor construction, it's only by a bit.

How's the cost of living up there, David? Are carpenter's wages sufficient to live on? Buy/own a place of one's own?Huck said it first. I just agreed with him.
davd,
I have actually spent some time in the rain shadow of the Olimpics, as well on the no shadowed side.

Can I just come over on weekends?
I'm not looking for job but one day I've gotta take the ferry over from Sidney to see that place. What's the population of the entire island? Maybe 10,000 I'm thinking?

Jim, I think it's probably high on the cost of living scale. Like anywhere else, the savvy, experienced, skilled folks are doing fine, the run-of-the-mill are renters or living with Mom. Our demographic is worsening re availability of skilled tradespeople.
Sly, definitely come over here... but on a weekend I'm going to give you a quick tour of the job and then we're going to drink some beer at the beach or something like that.
Roger, 7K year round and 14K summer, or thereabouts. Right now it's a little nutty over here. During the other 9 months I can park in front of my favorite cafe and take a booth to myself. I've been to your side of the straits several times and you folks are definitely quite civilized. More than one person I know here has "city digs" in Victoria or Sidney.
I've travelled around the world a bit and the term "provincial town/city" really applies to Victoria and area. The term has been used in books to describe places but it really didn't mean anything to me until I moved to the island and you think " yes. very provincial".
I still have a condo in Sidney but I live up island near Ladysmith.
One day I'll come over and buy you a coffee.
