Ive found out information that no one is trying to take advantage of and I wonder why. Ill be so kind to inform you right here on Breaktime so you can tell um where you heard it ! LOL. Also Ive read a lot of posts over the years that could have used this information. With out any further to do , Ill intoduce my findings;
All Planning and Zoning meetings are advertized in the papers with the agenda. Once the meeting is over the results are printed in the paper using “contracors, developers, & company names” in describing the order of action taken. Hint. For example;
“Last tuesday night the planning and zoning commision met . la la da . Big Time Developement Company applied for action closing a certain alley for the go ahead construction of a complex to be built as soon as the city engineer and the city building official review the building permit application and site plan “. Hint.
A city official paid by the public cannot reccomend any company or person in the pursuit of business interprize. “BUT”, they are a public servant installed in office to serve the publics needs of said description;
To point people in the right direction and assisiting with their ‘knowledge”, amoung their own official duties.
The Fire Chief , City Engineer, & the Building Official know in advance what will be built , where its going to be , who the owner of record is at the time , often times he will know about the site before the General is chosen , and sometimes all the names of people involved such as project managers , archies, and design people.
No matter what kind of vendor you may be that can service needs from material , to labor and porta potties , its a lot of business even in a small town.
Theres no doubt in my mind that a contractor could make a desk job living selling services just in that way. Not very complicated either . I offer my reason for its simplicity ;
Part of the folks paying are always from out of town wanting services in your town . They can pay for a crew to be shipped in or hire locally . Local contractors can compete easily.
Even in a small town there is so much work that it could be picked over and generals to pick from if that should be the case.

Under the International Fire Code which we have adopted that also has adopted the IBC, all buildings remodeled or renovated , or have recieved an addition will follow the Fire Code guidelines. So inspections shall be done either by permit , registration or otherwise.
So then :
All of those jobs are public record kept by the building official. They are also public information to be reviewed by you anytime during business hours.

my town already does it. You buy a permit and their sell your information to a junk mail list. I had mail coming from every contractor Hvac, suppier in town and did not even have a mailbox.
I think what you mention crosses the line . How big a town is it ?
Tim Mooney
Are you sure it's the town selling it. Like Tim said, all that is public information, which means some commercial outfit could have somebody go into the building department office periodically and write down all the recent information.
At any rate , the information is of impressive volume. Theres almost too much for one to comprehend .

"All Planning and Zoning meetings are advertized in the papers with the agenda. Once the meeting is over the results are printed in the paper using "contracors, developers, & company names" in describing the order of action taken. Hint. For example;"
A lot of that will depend on the city and the state "sunshine laws".
I see articles in the local suburban newspaper listing the meetings for two of the subburbs. But that is done as news and depending on the what else is happening and how big a project that this is suspect that everything might not be covered.
I have never seen anything in the KC papers about planning and zone in KC unless it is a some very, very, major developement.
Now I know that the meets have to be posted and I believe that there are notices posted in the city halls.
But if they have to be advertized they only need to be in one newspaper. And often that is a legal paper that you have to search out.
I would think that some of it would be in the legal section of the KS paper .
Still , its news and should be covered .
A trip to city hall will yeild all thats going on . Its another reason to buy donuts when the inspectors due to visit. A good relationship should produce a high yeild. It could with me is all I know. The ones that always take out permits and always call for inspections with a good report from me about their work gives those individuals favor .
A tradesman that does his job in the open and cares about his product is good enough for me to pass on knowledge. I respect those guys every day it seems by telling folks they will have to have a licensed tradesman.

Talking about hanging around city hall.
I know that Brownbag said that his city sold his information. Don't know if they do are not.
But alot of it is public information. And there are people that will go in each day and copy that information.
You can subscript to services that give that information. I know that there is at least one service that gives you list of people moving in, I think from water hookups.
Sounds like "Dodge Reports" When I was an outside sales man for a lumber yard, we recieved the reports every week...permits pulled, real estate trans actions, invitation to bid notices etc.
VERY helpful for my sales strategy..I could cold call a contractor with the information, and let him know that I already knew he had the job..if it was a competing lumber co. he was using, I'd try to get him a better price or service..sometimes they'd be real suprised that I had "done my homework"..

Yup , I suppose it would be very good information. At least it would be here .
Date , address , owner , contractor, size of job in footage and dollars, etc.
On big jobs I know more people involved . In Arkansas you have to give the subs name , address and phone becuse they use the subs to bond and its just required by the state the all subs be registared. Thats how the state checks their creditionals for license and permits.
