Help! I’ve been approached about putting in a full basement on my next house- a rarity here in Southern California: any of you easterners have any cost per square foot estimates? How long does it usually take from excavating to rolling first floor joists? Footprint is about 28×30.

Kevin- I haven't ventured into having to estimate for such a situation yet but here are a few questions to try to narrow it down for the other guys. Poured, block or wood foundation? What kind of soil? (for ease of excavation and special drainage considerations that may cost above and beyond normal)
*The walls would probably be block, and the location would be in the mountains, where compaction is good but rock could be a problem.Annual rainfall is about 15-18", so water isn't usually a problem. The frost line is shallow: the main reason for the basement is that it's either that or a fourth storey. I'm also interested in cost of a basement vs. more sq. footage on the house.
