Our furnace and AC unit blew 2 weeks ago (been freezin’ ever since) and I had 4 different companies give estimates. The dead items are a Bryant 100K btu 90 % furnace (18 yrs. old)- and a 3 1/2 ton AC. Suggested replacements are: 75K btu Tempstar furnace & 2.5 ton 10 SEER AC – $4000;
100K btu Kenmore furnace & 3 ton 13 SEER AC – $5680;
80K btu Janitrol furnace & 2.5 ton 10 SEER AC – $3500;
100K btu Kelvinator furnace & 4 ton 10 SEER AC – $3700
I tried to line them all up for ease of reading, don’t know if it’ll work.
Anyway….. they all give the same spiel: the furnace/AC unit they use is best; “the numbers don’t lie” on the heating/cooling calculations (yet I watched them do the calculations and one guy comes out w/75K btu/2.5 ton and the other with 100K btu/3 ton); if we put in a higher or lower rated furnace, it’ll work harder and therefore get burned out quicker (car engine analogies always used here) These are all 90% high efficiency units.
HOW do we choose? One has heavy duty coil, another has replacing 15 amp w/30 amp; placed on fiberglas pad, not placed on pad, just on ground as is now; 10 SEER AC is crappy and will be illegal in 2002 or 2006 – or not (depends on who you talk to)……and on and on. We have to decide by end of April if we pick the one with the 0% financing.
If anyone can please give their opinions, I’d appreciate it. Our house is 2-story, about 2100 sq ft. Thanks SOOOO much! Adrianne
