Galvanized Steel Under Shower Tile—Was It Common 75 Years Ago?
Demoing out the shower in a 1930s California cabin and under the tile there is a galvanized one-piece enclosure—it looks like the ancestor to today’s prefab showers. The pan looks like a normal mortar bed
Was this a common practice?
The galvanized is still in perfect condition so I’m wondering if I can retile over it and save myself some work or is there a reason these aren’t used anymore.

This was the inexpensive shower before fiberglass. What is holding the existing tile to the galvanized metal?
A badly applied coat of some kind of thinset. I can pull the tiles off by hand.
Seems like your answer is right in front of you.
