Gambrel Roof with Shed Dormers – how?
Good day,
This summer and for the rest of my life I will be building a 30×40 Shaker House that has a gambrel roof with shed dormers. A continous 4×8 beam runs the 40 foot length on each side and the lower 12:7 roof ties into that. On top and supported by the 4×8 built-up beam is the shallower pitched 6:12 roof. Connecting the 4×8 beams and lower roofs across the 30 foot widfth is the 2×8 celing joists or best dscribed as a long collar ties.
This design does not appear to be built by constructing trusses and rasing them in sequence due to the continous beam and dormers (3 each side of building).
Has anyone constucted a similar gambrel roof and have experience or can point me to a good book to illustrate the process and order?

What the heck is holding all this up?
A 4X8 beam can't span 40'
And 2X8s can't span 30'.
You refer to a "design", but don't say where it came from.
Trusses could maybe be made to work if the dormers aren't too wide.
Got a picture? Blueprint? Sketch you could scan and post?
A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while, he knows something.
the upper roof eave gets dragged down on the same 12:7 pitch wherever the dormers are to be located
