Was wondering of anyone knew of a good source of reference on information on converting a garage into a cottage? Would like to get some ideas going for a future project. Maybe some books or pix anyone might have from past projects etc…

It'd work better on this board if you added where you are, what you've got to work with and what you'd like to turn it into.
I'm in New York, the Garage is 30' x 30' and there is no set plan at this point.
Two car detached garage. Looking to remove doors in front/ add windows. Add sliding doors or french doors on side. Add bathroom with stand up shower. Leave a portion unfinished for work area. Possibly cathedral one portion (livingroom). Deck an attic area for storage with access from work room. 2x6 deck with insulation over slab. At this point it looks like: living room, bedroom, bathroom and work area.
Nothing set in stone. Open to ideas, that's why I inquired about any reference material such as books, magazines etc... that anyone is familiar with that might help out with ideas, situations that might be encountered etc...
Mick, Good place to start might be with your local zoning or local building inspector to see if conversion is permisable and what sort of permits would be requied. Potable water, sanitary sewer connections. Adequate power and heating available? Roger
Have all that covered Roger, thanks.
Just looking to get some ideas, customer wants to get creative. Some of "my" best ideas come from seeing it somewhere else :)
Mick,
Tauton press sells a book for you. the tittle is Garage, reinventing the place we park. by Obolensky. The number is # 070724
While much of it is concerned with the parking aspect of garages the pictures all show various conversions done.. turning garages into living spaces.
I hope you are looking for inspration and not a set of plans, along with a list of materials as well as costs.
It doesn't work that way.. (but then maybe you knew that?)
Thanks for book info Frenchy,
Yes, just inspiration.
I'm quite capable of planning and estimating :)
I'll give it a look. Thanks.
I had it home from the library in the fall. Some quite interesting ideas.
Second for the "garage" book from Taunton. Regularly I pull it out to dream some more about the garage/shop/bonus spaceabove/match our 30's craftsman bungalow I want to build in our backyard off the alley.
Ordered the book, looking forward to it.
If anyone has any interesting ideas, love to hear (or see) em'
Should be a fun project.
