garden window

pamilyn | Posted in General Discussion on July 19, 2006 12:25pm

Hi everyone, visiting from CT. I am starting to research garden windows. The kind that bump out but have glass on the top. Can anyone start me in the right direction for good quality affordable units? Am I better off just bumping out the area that I want and installing regular casement windows? Am I making myself clear at all? I want a ten foot long (wide, approx.) window along the wall in my kitchen. I want it glass that I can open some of the windows. I will be using it to display art objects and it will be over the kitchen sink. Help please!! TIA, Pamilyn

that has to be the mother of all sinks...

do you want that in metal or wood...

Which direction does the window face?

There are some good ones, well really = non bogus ones.  A couple of local replacement fabricators produce a nice unit.  Works well, holds up and is relatively easy to use.  Big problem is reaching the latch and crank.  Some units are not user friendly.  Being weather tite is a big concern.  One I installed ages ago had a flip up lid.  This at the time cost maybe 1100.00.  Not cheap but it did work well and when properly installed, did not leak.  Many of these people nail it on the wall, slap some trim on it and caulk the #### outta it.  Over time, the weight of the glass pulls on it, making the sash bind and leaks spring up.

    Best of luck.

I'm not real excited with metal garden windows as they can frost up in the winter, and with the shrinking of the usually alum. frames, get sloppy in the seal.  Vinyl can be week.  The best examples i've seen lately are fibreglass.  More rigid than vinyl, usually insulated with rigid fibreglass or foam.  And impervious to water.  If you are not stuffing plants in there and overwatering then perhaps a good thing might be a small bow or bay like Imerc shows.  Those units are nice, the 4'+ wide one I installed in a kitchen turned out real nice with the backsplash tile running up and onto the base.  Andersens already assembled unit, hung from above with cable.  Well insulated deck, clean install.  Side sash operable, no glass on lid-fit up under wide roof overhang.

East exposure, good deal-not much heat gain that direction.

A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Thanks everyone. I like the Anderson 90 degree box window. I will check other manufacturers. I didn't know they made these. Easier than building out the wall I think and I don't need the glass top. Vynal scares me...thanks again. PamilynThe purpose of Art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls

We also wanted a garden window, over the sink, and looked at most of the options.

In my opinion, the Kolbe garden window is the best.

    http://www.kolbe-kolbe.com/homeOwner/index.cfm?page=products&sub=windowsInfo&id=9&detail=52

Ultimately we decided against the window due to placement (it would have projected out over an outside staircase and our eaves are relatively low outside so it would have been a problem fitting it properly in the wall...

If you can do without the glass roof you can bump out the plane of virtually any (combination of) window(s).  Would give you a lot more flexibility in a 10 foot opening.  Man, that's some wide garden window.Tipi, Tipi, Tipi!

I don't think 10' is likely. I've installed some vinyl 5' units... they were around $500 each and of average quality. Vinyl windows are usually a regional thing, so find out who manufactures them near you and see what they offer. There are some national manufacturers like Milgard that are available everywhere.

Building your own bay is a much more involved project, mainly because you need to deal with the roof over it. With a garden window you just pop it in.
