I heard that recently there was a new home near here that burned down a week after the owners moved into it.
The fire was supposedly started by a gas fireplace – I believe it’s what they call a “direct vent” kind? It has a flue that goes out the back wall a couple of feet above the fireplace.
I hear there was some sort of “heat shield” that wasn’t installed, and that’s what caused the fire.
Any idea what sort of heat shield these require that could have easily been left off? I’ve never seen one of these go in and know very little about them.
Sorry I don’t know more details – Everything I’ve heard is just second-hand rumors. Just trying to learn something……..
The best way to have a quiche for dinner is to make it up and put it in the oven to bake at 325 degrees. Meanwhile, get out a large T-bone, grill it, and when it’s done, eat it.
As for the quiche, continue to let it bake, but otherwise ignore it.

Boss,
When the direct vent pipe is run thru the wall a heat shield plate is placed in the wall chase to keep any flammable material from getting to close to the pipe. It basically is a alum. plate with a tab on top that stops any material from sitting on the pipe
