I need some advice. The end of a unused but charged gas line is in my way, it is 3/4″ black pipe in 6′ sections and is capped off. I need to remove one of the sections and recap it. I was thinking that I turn off the main and let the the kitchen stove run out the gas in the line. Ventilate the basement remove the section and replace the cap on the shortened line. Does this sound like a plan. Also what kind of sealant do I use on the pipe threads.

I wouldn't,,I think you better call a pro. At least call your ins co. so they can cancel your home policy so the rest of us don't get a big rate increase.
If you play around with gas your risk is incalculable(sp). Why not spend a few bucks so there is no risk.

Richdes,
Sounds like a good plan to me. Use pipe dope on the male threads and remember to relight pilots. If you turn off at the meter it may need to be reset, usually by unscrewing a cap and pushing a button. Test your cap with soapy water, not a flame.
I don't even bother to turn off but I been doing this a while.

Is this work on your house or someone else's, depending on the area I would assume if your doing this a contracting job for someone, you probably need a licensed professional for both legal reasons and your insurance
Must depend on your area.
Around here, the gas company will bring gas to the house. Inside the house it is your responsibility. Helped my neighbor put in his.
When you're done you call the gas company, and they come out for free and test the line and turn the gas on.
Call your gas company first, see what they suggest. If they're like mine the test is free, and it's nice to get their ok before the gas is on.
