We have gas logs in the fireplace and DW wants them to work for the holidays (notice i didn’t say Christmas … that would be politically incorrect). the pilot comes on when I hold in the starter button, but goes out when I releas it. Seems that would be either a bad thermocouple or bad gas block.
I pulled the TC and tried to check it with a meter. Sitting cold, one lead against the tube and one against the tip of the connection, it reads about zero ohms. When I place the TC end in a candle flame, the resistance goes up to 10-15 ohms. Does that sound right?

Resistance shouldn't change much, but the TC should produce a few millivolts of voltage. If it's producing voltage, however, it could throw off the ohm reading, so hard to interpret that.
When you try to start do you hold the button in for 30-60 seconds after lighting, to give the TC time to warm up?
Ok, I changed the scale on the vom and tried again. Witht the end in a candle flame, I get about 25 millivolts. Before I took it apart, I held the button in for about a min ute, and the pilot goes out as soon as I release the button."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Fast Eddie,On one I worked on there was an oxygen sensor that was bad. KK
Mine is a regular vented set of logs in a true wood burning fireplace, thus no O2 sensor.
I'll try the direct-force-adjustemnt method."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Since thermocouples are cheap, I normally just replace them with a new one. Not being an electrician I think that your measurment is showing an increase in resistance, thats not going to get your valve to operate. All I know is they should be 20-30 millivolts.
I noticed that some gas appliances get stuck or clogged after sitting for a while.
You can hold down the button, light the pilot and keep the button down for a minute.
But before you let up on the button give the valve a good wack.
Sometimes the valve gets stuck from not being used.
