Hi-
I am looking to replace my 20+ year old gas range. The wife and I have it narrowed down to an Amana or a Whirlpool (both in the $700-$900 range for the features we want.) Does anyone have opinions on either brand from experience?
I am set against GE and Frigidaire, from past experience and things I’ve been told at several stores now. Maytag was another option but don’t like the design…
Thanks for the input!

Had both, would buy either again.
*Seems you would want to take this question over to the cook's board. Around here, we're just happy to have something hot to eat.SHG
*SHG-Thanks for the heads up. I shall take it over there...-Brian
*Brian,We've had the Amana for 6-7 years and I would give it mixed reviews. It looks nice and the specially designed broiler works well. On the other hand, the electronic ignition system failed in the first year (it was replaced under warranty). The ignitions for the top burners still have a nasty habit of continuing to click after the gas is on. This happens when multiple burners are in use. My wife can get it to stop by turning the burners on and off but it's still a pain. Finally, those gray colored top burner grates look nice but they're tough to clean.
*Chip, unless there is a true malfunction, the nasty habit of ignition clicking is a design feature built in to assure ignition. Gas does not always fire up immediately so the ignition fires repeatedly for a predetermined length of time so that inattentive cooks get a pot full of boiling water instead of a house full of gas. There is no pilot light and therefore no automatic gas shutoff due to an unenergized thermocouple. BTW, have you ever experienced the mini-explosion when mistiming the application of a match or the manual piezo button to a stove or to a backyard barbeque?Another 2¢ into the pot.
*Ralph,Could it be possible that what Chip may be getting at is that some stove burners have an area on the knob that says "lite" and perhaps when he switches it away from "lite" the ignitors continue to fire for the first time until he runs the process over. That would get really annoying. Care to comment Chip? I up you 3 cents, we now have a nickel in the pot.
*Ralph and Brian,I checked with the authority on our stove (my wife). She says that the continuous ignition clicking can occur both before and after a burner is lighted. Sometimes the small 3" plate over the ignition is slightly ajar and ajusting those will solve the problem. Other times, she turns the burners off and on until the clicking stops. When this problem happens all of the burner ignitions click simultaneously and indefinetly. So, I think that this is a malfunction of some sort. Anyway, it creates quite a lot of noise when it does happen (perhaps a couple of times a week). Brian's reference to the burner knobs made me think of another problem. Growing up in the 1950's, our stove at home had raised letters on the knobs for "off", "warm", etc. The Amana (and perhaps other modern stoves) have only painted letters and those have rubbed off over the last few years which, I think, can create a hazard.
