Well, that’s what it sounds like. It has started to put out a ringing sound of 2-4 quick 1/2 second rings followed by a 5-6 second long ring.
These little sessions may occur at 4-5 minute intervals on for a qtr to half hour and then it stops. It’s not a whistling, tea kettle type sound like a pressure valve would make(I think) but more like the clear ring that you get from tapping a glass with a knife. Sould I be panicing? It is making hot water just fine and it doesn’t seem to be hotter or colder than normal. I wish I knew a plumber I could trust to do a good job, I HATE gas.

Get it figured out yet? What was it anyhow?

Some kind of expansion/contraction noise - possibly in the water lines? I doubt if gas has anything to do with the problem.
Do you drain it once a year? Do you have hard water? May be scale expanding/contracting and causing noise. I had an old water heater that was full of lime and especially at night I could hear sort of a percolating sound from hot spots in the lime (I assumed). When I replaced it, there was room for maybe five gallons of water in the 18 gallon tank. (It's a wonder how I ever got enough hot water for showers!)
It's really weird, it hasn't made a peep since I posted the original message. I have spooky feelings about this heater. I think it's an alien in disguise. Anyway the house is for sale and maybe I'll sell it before it decides to sing again. (Oh, please.)Tigger
