Whatever you do, don't get one that's powered by an electric motor

Dan, I had a 5000kw generac powered by a 10hp brigss& stratton . It was ok but loud as hell. When it packed it in I bought a 6500kw honda liquid cooled , what a difference . I say go honda
they are pricey but worth it.
*I have to agree with all the praise heaped on the Honda generators, but I wonder if Pat's response wasn't a typo. Maybe a 5 KW, but a 5000 KW unit is pretty impressive on a 10 HP motor, even a solid B & S. Five megawatts is a heap of power, Pat ! All joking aside, the Honda is far the best for the money and pretty reliable as well. However, the Honda units are sometimes fitted with generic alternators for some markets (as was pointed out in a previous post), so a little investigation is in order before purchasing one.

I'm in the market for a generator for an emergency backup power supply to my house. Anyone have any good or bad experiences with any particular makes or models?
What criterea are the most important when shopping for this tool?
Thanks in advance,
Dan Morrison
*Dan: It's hard to beat the old reliable Honda. I am speaking of the generater made by Honda in which both generating unit and the engine are made by Honda. Some outfits are now buying Honda engines and putting them on other brands of generators. I have seen the Honda put up with incredible amounts of abuse on construction sites. I assume you need standby power-I have a 5KW which will handle a 3/4 hp well and a refrigerator and you can throw in the tv and a couple lights to boot.
