I’m getting ready to start construction on a 2900 sq. ft. home in central PA. We are installing a geo-thermal heat system with about a 4-ton unit, 3 zones. Looking for ways to cut costs natually the heat system comes up as whether we should switch to a regular heat pump system. Could someone give me thier thoughts and experiences with a geo-thermal system and just how inexspensive it is once the start up cost is over.
Thanks
Roy

You should be able to calculate this. Or your HVAC contractor should be able to for you. I have a 4 Ton GSHP (ground source heat pump, or geo). It draws 13.9 amps, add in a bit for the pumps, and if I run it 24/7, at my elec rates, it'll cost at most $100/month, give or take. I have good elec rates. Calc yours. And then calc the monthly cost of a air-sourced heat pump to provide the same btu's.
For an apparently unbiased point of view, contact your local electrical utility. Many have special departments and incentives for using GW heat pumps. If they do, they will also provide references to designated contractors trained in these units.
