Hello to all,
I am going to build a shop this spring..and the site is in the bottom of a ravine that is beside our home. I plan on a dozer coming in and leveling the bottom of the ravine, taking the dirt and rock out, and having a 40′ by 60′ spot to start….next I am going to lay block 10′ high with a walkout on one of the 40′ ends. This will be auto, welding, and garage…etc. There will a second story on this for a wood shop. My question is: If I backfill the basement..can I lay poly piping to be used for heat and cooling?? I was thinkink coiling poly around the buidling where the backfill will be 10′ deep. Is that deep enough to work?? I figure I would run the pipe and hook it up later when finances allow….What does anybody think?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions..Randy

I'm thinking about what and when something is going to come down that ravine...
This is a little off the beaten path, but..... I was really eager to do geo thermal at my place, but discovered that there are few if any contractors that really wanted to fool with it. People I spoke to who had geothermal said they had a great deal of difficulty getting proper installation and competent service when there were problems. This was enough to scare me off.....
If you coil pipe around the building you'll just be borrowing from Pete to pay Paul. It needs to be some distance from the building.
good comment Dan.
Did a study in the '70s on buried lines, there is about a 40 foot thermal gradient in frozen soil in 4 ft frost depth areas, so anything inside 80 (eighty) feet there are the P&P consequenses.
