sirs,To join lengths of polyethelene tubing requires heating the poly to 500 degrees. The tool used for this is known as a socket fusion welder. We are looking for a low cost ,used or homemade version.New commercial fusion welders sell for 500 or more dollars but are simply 600 watt heaters—way over priced!! Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance,Tess

The one I've seen in operation didn't particularly strike me as over-priced. So it only uses 600 watts! So watt?
The equipment had a transformer unit, the heating ring (sized to the pipe) the sizing plug and other components I failed to commit to memory.
Simple? Yes. But the components were all heavy industrial construction, machined parts, etc. The tubing being welded was 1 1/4".
I suppose you could build one, or maybe find a used one. I don't know that the integrity of a well fused joint, however, could be ensured with a "cheapy" version.
If the equipment required to properly and permantly fuse 3 or 4 thousand feet of pipe that's going to be buried and inaccessable and is the integral part of a $15K plus heat system costs $600 bucks and can be used again and again, I'd say it's a pretty reasonable investment.
