I’m installing backsplash for a customer next week and they’ve chosen some 4×4 red glass tiles to be installed as highlights in the otherwise basic white ceramic tile. I normally use mastic for splashes instead of mixing modified thinset. It seems that the mastic may not be compatible with glass.
Anyone use mastic on glass? Any problems?
Could I mix a tiny batch of thinset just for the glass or should I just go ahead and use modified thinset on the whole thing?
Thanks for your thoughts!
Eric

I'd do the whole thing with white thinset and sleep like a baby.

I'm curious what the manufacturer recommends?
I have used both mastic and thinset with glass tiles. No problems either way.
Most recently did a large backsplash with glass mosaics and used mastic. It is important to smooth out the ridges left by the notched trowel as these can be visible after you set the tile. We used mastic at the recommendation of the supplier.
Hi,
I just did a glass back splash and used mastic. The glass tile I used had an etched back, but some also came with a painted white back. The manufacturer recommended mastic in this application.
My tile had a rough surface, and they recommended that I apply a light coart of mineral oil before grouting, which worked like charm. I will do this from now on because grout haze has always been a huge problem for me even with the application of a sealer before grouting.
