I’ve heard of a little white patch that glues on the side of a tape measure and you can write on it with pencil, then erase with your thumb. Would be really handy for writing down measurements before heading out to the chop saw. Anybody know where I can get such? I’ve also heard you can use white vinyl siding cut to fit and glued on, but wondered if there was something better. Thanks. Andy Lee

The first time I heard this tip, it was Formica.
Andy, I remember what your talking about and used one for a few weeks before the tape went south. I think I bought it at one of the big boxes, however I haven't seen them in years.
The Formica idea sounds much better.
I peel off the labels, sand the sides with medium sandpaper. When I don't have any room left to write I sand it all off again. I have yet to wear through the sides before the blades break.
Never tried the writing on the side thing. I generally just use a scrap of lumber.
I did get one of those tapes where they have a built-in voice recorder, though. Thought it would be great for recording measurements then playing them back. But it ended up being kinda fragile. One trip off a 9' basement wall and it quit working.

I like the idea, if they can just make it more durable. My kids sure had fun with it............(-:
