Anybody else using this?
FatRoman turned me on to it several months ago and it’s become a necessary tool. The “documents” portion is the major difference from other email programs. For instance, I can start work on an Excel spread sheet in the office and finish it later in front of the fire on the laptop. Or I can access all my pix from anywhere I can get email.
There’s lot’s more to it – I’m just starting to scratch the surface. I showed it to Sphere today and he’s hooked.

I'm using it to host the company email domain--so we get branded email and all the document sharing goodies.

Are you talking about Gmail?
You can do a lot with a google account, not the least of which is Gmail.
Google docs has already been mentioned. You can share a calendar with anyone else (you can select who sees what). Could be great for working with subs.
Google reader is a great way to keep up on blogs.
You can make a map with google maps and email it to others. Just last night, I highlighted a neighborhood and emailed it to a company that supplies mailing lists. I want to send a letter to the people who live around a job we're doing currently.
More and more retailers are working with Google checkout, which allows you to enter your google password to pay for items purchased online. It is easier because you don't have to set up an account with every online store and safer since you don't have to release all of your personal information.
I'm sure there will be more to come.

I tried all the google stuff a year or two ago and ended up rejecting it. I liked it at first but then got tired of not being able to sort the inbox.
The document thing was cool but I hated the login process and I hated the auto run feature.
Then I realized that I also hate Google and find them to be somewhat.....creepy. I don't like the way they market to me because of emails I've sent or received. I find them to be intrusive in the same way that Microsft is.
I did learn to use spreadsheets using the google docs but found that Excel was superior for some functions and I have never went back to google.
Other than that, it's pretty good.
"creepy. I don't like the way they market to me because of emails I've sent or received"That's been a concern of mine with google too.

That's some what possible now. The other clients I've used had lots of sorting options, but they didn't work very well. In short, I can make it sort well enough for my uses.

That must have changed. There's no separate login from the mail client.

I felt the same at first, but I've decided to embrace that creepiness and make it work for me. Their advertising is almost un-noticable unless you're looking for it and it's actually lead me to some places I wanted to go. I am tired of Spam recipes everytime I clear the spam section.
but found that Excel was superior for some functions
Of course it is. OTOH, I've back graded to Excel 2000 because the newer versions have too many options to wade thru to do what I need to do. I found Open Office cumbersome for the same reason. http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image

My Trash folder said "You can make a lovely hat out of previously used aluminum foil".
That "tip" thing ( RT, side on YOUR screen) is a header type on my version.

I've found that sorting becomes unnecessary once you get used to the search function. The default full-text search is super fast and surprisingly useful, but the special search keywords are what really put the nail in sorting's coffin. Try searching for "from:[someone's name]", for example, or "after:2/14/09". Here's a list of tips.
It may help the creepiness factor to remember that google's ads are geared only toward whatever's being displayed on the current page you're on. If you happen to be reading one of your sent emails that mentions bathtubs, you'll see bathtub ads. It's not like they scan through all your sent and received mail and use that to decide what ads to show you. For what it's worth, this is also what happens whenever you visit a webpage that happens to use google's ad delivery service.
I didn't know that was available as an option.
I have been using it lately as an alternate account for on the job and emailing myself drawings from the desktop to the laptop.
My main account is more difficult to access from the laptop.
I have thought of changing to the gamil entirely for it's thorough spam filtering, but it is sometimes hard to hook up with from the dial up. It tells me to revert to the previous version, whatever that means, and there are other times I go to send something and it hits a hiccup, saying something about system busy and try again in a few seconds. Sometimes one second wait is enough. Other times I sit there hitting the send button twenty times before it goes thru.
So there are pros and cons.
A new client who is very high tech ( owns a tech storage business ) uses gmail for his.

don't you have those 2 networked together? Network transfer of the file would be much faster via a network than your dialup.
I discussed that with Grant yesterday, I can't get my LT and DT to network for the life of me, he thinks its the router issue, I think I need a rent-a-geek. The Gmail should help, so far I just have it on the LT, now, I don't ever have to open AOL for mail.
The wife does the IM thing with her sisters and daughter, so she'll not stray away from AOL...grrrrrr.
But I do kinda need AOL for dialup when the satellite blanks out.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

When I switched my virus stuff to AVG I had to go through a few hoops with it to re-establish the networking that was working fine prior to AVG. So the problem may not just be the settings for your router.
Yeah, I'm just gonna get a geek and watch. I have F-secure, AVG, firewalls more damm security than a NYC Brownstone door. No Norton or that other one tho' so alls good there.

Laptop mostly on the job six miles away. One advantage - a neighbor down there has a satellite high speed connection and unsecured wireless network.

ahso!
You must be able to trust the client and the location well enough to leave the LT. I haven't ever been to that point before.
This is the kind of place where I leave my house unlocked when I go away for two weeks. The jobsite has two locks on every door and an alarm system.

You should be able to set up your laptop to access your regular e-mail. I have mine set up that way. It will get and send mail as long as there is an internet connection.I use Thunderbird for my e-mail client. Now some e-mail servers might restrict sending, but receiving should always be fine. You just need the SMTP and POP3 info.
I CAN do it, but it is less than easy and there are other glitches.Biggest reason is that I leave the desktop on at home most of the time, so it recieves the emails steadily all day long and I can read them when I get home without spending ten minutes getting turned on, linking up and downloading them all. So I can't log into my server from the laptop when I am already logged in. And once an email is downloaded to the desktop, it is no longer on the server. When I travel and the desk is turned off, I can jump through a couple hoops to get the account or I can view them and respond thru an online viewer generally similar to google, and leave them on the server to be downloaded to the main DT machine later.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
You should be able to turn off the "delete from server when downloaded", and allow multiple clients. At least from a technical standpoint.Management rules are another story. Not that I really care one way or the other. I'm just pointing out that you should be able to do it, and it shouldn't be a hassle once set up.
Yes, I know all that. I have it set the way I want it.
