Got a decent “salt box” plan?

Sphere | Posted in General Discussion on April 4, 2008 12:41pm

Lookin for a side ele. of a New England style salt box, just for proportions of wall heights and roof pitch’s.

Building is a large dog house, gonna fit on a 4×8 footprint and I was hopin to size the rest accordingly, thinking that style would work well for 8 pups, and conserve materials, while dissuading roof naps.

Any one have a quick rule of thumb or side view plan?

Thought at this time is keep tall wall @ 4′ high or less, low side ? 2′?  ridge off center?

TIA.

    Huh,,guess not.

Well, I went and picked up 20 2x4s and I have 5 sheets of OSB.

Looks like ( by my rough sketch on the table here) I'll be just off center w/th ridge, and the final ridge top is about 5' high. Using a 4' wide base, 4' tall front wall, and 2' tall rear wall. 12/12 roof.

Getting cutting as soon as the flood recedes. I hope. unless someone has a better ideer.

      Hey Sphere,

The problem with the salt box design is that it won't scale down and look like much other than a mistake.  There's no overhang on the roof so it's lines aren't very distinctive either.

But if you want to see plans, try Googling "house plans, salt box" or just "house plans".  Last time I checked there were lots of sites displaying and sell plans with artists drawings of them too.

IMO, a flying gable looks nice on small out buildings.  I've done a couple of pool house like that.  Different and easy to do with a little plain geometry.

Ok, see that front wall? it'll be 8' long. Side walls @ 4'.  I figgure the front wall @ 4' tall and the back @ 2' tall.

Like I said, I drew it on the coffee table and laid a framing sq. from top of wall to top of wall, and it sorta looks right..I did forget that SB's dont have overhangs. I was extending the roof line and trying for shade at the door opening..looked like krap, now I know why.

maybe give the dog house a porch? LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

check out the ideas/plans here http://www.cadsmith.com/garage_plans/saltbox-garages.htm

I see a lot of salt box garages/sheds with roofs that overhang the front doors.  I could drive around town and get pictures of at least 4 within a quarter mile but it's raining out and I'm cold.  Just have to use your imagination.

I pretty much hope to stick with the mats. I have laying around, and the new 2x's I snagged. After all it is only a doghouse, a BIG dog house at that.

But, we have to look at it for quite awhile, and thinking of design,  was considering weather and comfort as well...hell, at 8' long and 4' , I'll fit in there should the need arise (G).

I wanted to pre fab the roof in the shop today, wound up making a screen door instead, and took a nap..ooops.

Thank you all for the help, at least no one said "No, no , no..no saltbox south of the Manson -Nixon line..LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Quick and dirty. Hadda do something, they were driving us nuts.

Salt Box woulda been too tall I think, but that front clip is facing SE so it'll help with summer sun, the low back is perfect for hiding from the west sun.

Good call buddy! 5 males..yikes!  They're still so young they squat like a girl for now..maybe that siding should be prepainted..LOL

Working with them under foot is NOT OSHA approved BTW. I had most of it up, then re-closed the fence and made a real gate, before they came out. Still had a few odds and ends to do, but they were all over me..and I ran out of roof screws and deck screws as I myself wore out.

They be sleeping happily and so will I be in just a few minutes.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

One thought which may have gotten lost in the rush to get the dogs out of your bedroom; how're you going to get inside their new home to clean the floor or whatever else may be needed?

          4. User avater
            Sphere | Apr 06, 2008 04:47pm | #17

The far gable wall is removeable. Matter of fact, I left it off last night, so's they could circle in and out. I'll add a larger access panel when I put the siding on.

First night out went without a hitch, they all wadded up inside just after dark, not a PEEP all night, and were still sleepy eyed at 0630 when I got up for coffee..took out food and they were as happy as clams, ( if clams really are happy?). First night we've slept straight thru in weeks, 'cept for some idjit that has my cell number, and was calling someone else at midnight..2x, I hadda turn the phone off.

Carly stayed in the house ( our house) all night. She has a door to outside, but not the puppy pen..she gets em all riled up and hard to keep em focused on "training"measures.

Ed stays in all night, he can't fit thru the dog door..so unless the wild pack that roams the area at night start making a racket, we can all sleep well..if they start up, all hell breaks loose. Every dog for miles joins the chourus. Add a few Coyote yips and we are off to the races..when the cats come screaming in the door at 100mph, I know the coyotes are getting close.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Glad to hear that you were a step ahead of me.

That's a really good sign, that the pups were happy outside all night, without mom.  Seems like your timing is working out perfectly, for all involved.

Timing..yeah. Hadda wait till I gave them the shots for Parvo and dog disease..then that had to coincide with cessation of nursing.  But then the weather was nasty...and finally it all gelled.

            man, it has been hell.

Now I need to pull up the rug in the bedroom, and it is glued to 1/4" luaun..so that has to go. Then shellac the OSB subfloor for kicks...then new underlayment and gonna wait for finish floor..wide plank pine I have from the walls of the log part of the house..still needs edgeing and trimming up.

Yeah, not much else going on..LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Yup, second look it seems like a bank teller tube on a block.

I'd side that with something very durable.  I could show you what a pack of bulldogs can do to osb.  Aint pretty, those bulldogs are like beavers.

Oh that!  Yeah, Gunner gave me a few of them, I use them for deck screw storage..LOL One of these days just for Ghits and Shiggles I am gonna send a tube of screws to the drive in teller..she's cool.

Rethinking the siding, I have a pile of hardie claps..I think that'd work..if not, I have some salvaged corrugated steel roofing, but that is ugly as sin..and this is all just out the kitchen window.  Like I care about beauty..(G)

If we keep 2 ( the plan so FAR) it'll be overkill dog house..so I screwed everything to allow future remodeling without a wrecking bar..lots of screws. I had 4 makita batts cycling on two chargers for the impact driver..actually, except for the buttoncaps on the roof ( air) no corded tools used at all on the whole thing..Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I'd go for hardi. Probably face screw them on in case they get dog eared, if you know what I mean.

The bulldogs didnt like the shape of their doorway.  It's kind of organic shaped now.  I don't know why they didn't like the roof though.

eh, we're doin Ok with the food situ.  Got a huge #### self feeder (under roof) and it holds 30-40 lbs of chow, and 5 gals of water.  30 bucks at the farm supply store.  So far, it's ham dandy for them.

Went thru 3 @ 2.00$ beach balls..need something a bit more durable..they peel tennis balls like an orange. Bury the pig ears, and love the wood scraps of 2x4 and 1x4 leftover from const. the palace..cheap toys right there.

Just had major weather blow thru, 'nado's not far from us..the palace did it's job..dry pups, and still standing. (G)  I bet the hail on the metal roof got thier attn.

I've said this here before when someone wanted a shed, but seems like you could overlap layers of OSB or plywood and make a sort of ogee-curved, upside-down-boat looking shelter. With a keel as the roof ridge and sloping in an onion-dome sort of way away from that, it would discourage roof sleeping and be strong besides!
