I downloaded a new cad program called Sketchup. (www.sketchup.com) It is a 3d modeling program that is easy and actually fun! The web download version gives 8 hours of use. I am seriously thinking about buying the full version for $500…it’s that good.
Here’s what less than half my trial time yeilded (that includes learning/playaround time).

here's an x-ray view and one with wood:
That's pretty awesome, does it allow you to put dimesions with it?
yep...easily too...and the dimensions will "move" as you orbit around the model. That means you always see them correctly as the object moves.
I loaded that program awhile back, all I can say is that I wasn't able to do anything
with it. Just to stupid when it comes to computers. So I'm kinda of envious, and I'll
just have to stick to my Punch software(just click and drag).
butch and mojo,
unlike autocad and adobe programs that i've had to buy a book on to learn, sketchup has an extensive collection of free online video tutorials. I watched 5 or six tutorials before using the program.
I really think most any one can use this program. My wife used this program and created a good design for a building (she is not the computer type).
As far as price goes...there is a student use version for $99. Do you know a student or maybe you want to take some classes.
try these:
PER 130 - stress managment: neuromuscular relaxation
FST 245 - supervisory housekeeping
LST 214 - garden design and mantenance
CUL 105 - beginning cake decorating
WOD 162 - woodworking 1
take those over the course of a couple years and you will be able to own the program much cheaper....and you will be the best cake decorator on your block!

Very slick, Gabe. I picked up Home Architect 3D based on recommendation here, but still would like to find a simple, inexpensive (<$100) CAD program to make simple line drawings, say for a cabinet or small deck. This $500 program is more than I need or can justify for the few times a year I would use it. Anyone have a favorite?

Key Cad..or ace cad...I had used it for some stuff that was like what your needs sound like..pretty inexpensive.
